Artist Statement My work was characterized by a woman viewing my paintings saying my work has charm of "Contemporary Folk Art". I spent some time thinking about her observation and become quite comfortable with her description. I try to focus on the simplicity of my subjects by eliminating the clutter and irrelevant objects that can distract from the image i try to portray. Often stark, I try to evoke comfort and serenity in my landscapes. The balance I have achieved by combining reality, imagination and technical skill is apparent in many of my compositions. Living in the mountain area of Asheville, North Carolina. I have found the beauty of nature, freedom of expression and the confidence to be creative. Currently I paint the visions I see in my mind's eye, which have evolved over time to become subjects of my own that I want to see, imagine and share with others. My art is a mirror of where I live and how I live. I try to define what already exists and make it noticeable to others who have less time and attention to enjoy the subjects. |
